Deniers, NIMBYs and Conspiracy Theories

I’ve been swimming upstream in the river of culture as long as I can remember. I once questioned my third grade teacher about the myth of Mrs. O’Leary’s cow in the Great Chicago Fire. She was not amused.

But at least she didn’t call me a conspiracy theorist or a history denier. She just smiled indulgently and went on with her story.

It seems to be a common reaction to perceived criticism to strike out against the critic with name-calling and meaningless pejoratives. Those who cast doubt on human causation of climate variation are labeled “deniers,” worse yet, “climate deniers” and  “science deniers,”  as if anyone could deny climate or science. Those who question the “Lone Nut” assassin claims for the Kennedy brothers, Martin Luther King, Jr and  Malcom X are called “conspiracy theorists,” thus denigrating conspiracies, which are very real, and theory, which is an important component of the scientific method.

It’s difficult enough to seriously research significant historical events and current cultural trends without constantly having to respond to such ignorant accusations. It would be bad enough if they were restricted to the unknowing and unwilling to learn.

In the volatile world of public information, the casting of conspiracy and denier labels can have a significant cooling effect on the acceptance of ideas alternative to those professed by official organizations and mainstream media. Don’t think that this hasn’t escaped the notice of those whose reputations, fortunes and access to power and control are at risk to self-enlightened, critical thinkers with their own ideas and who are willing to publicly express them.

Where does the extensive and coordinated campaign to label opponents of “Global Warming” as “climate deniers” (similar to Holocaust deniers) originate? Where did the idea of “conspiracy theory” come from, and how and by whom has it been used?  James F. Tracy and Cass Sunstein have some interesting ideas about that:

Having read JFK and the Unspeakable several years ago, I’ve been thinking about assassinations for quite a while and I’ve seen how “conspiracy theory” is used to shut off debate, to signal that we’re entering “the unspeakable” zone. So I began to wonder if the use of the term Conspiracy Theory might be a conspiracy itself.

The Daniel Ellsberg Challenge

Jeff Morley, in his article: JFKfacts – The Ellsberg challenge, asks two questions posed to him by Daniel Ellsberg, liberator of “The Pentagon Papers”:

“What do you want to happen as a result of your understanding of the JFK [assassination] story? What, if anything, does it require the American government to do in 2014?”
Unfortunately, “the government” cannot and will not do anything regarding the Kennedy / King / Malcolm X assassinations, because the legitimacy of the United States government is held hostage to the truth.
There will, of course, never be a grand reveal of the truth that strips away the fog of amnesia from the minds of the American public. This will not be allowed. While there may be startling revelations at some point in the future, they will be stage-managed by the mental manipulators, such that their effect on the perceptions of the public will be minimized, if not entirely negated. The Emperor’s nudity must never be allowed to be revealed.
We already know, with little doubt, of the complicity and outright authorship of activities by United States government security agencies such as the FBI and CIA, in COINTELPRO-like programs to discredit the reputations of public figures, internationally and domestically. It is only a tiny step from disinformation (lying) and propaganda to averting the official eyes from more active interference, and yet a smaller step, once on the path, to participation. The result of the officially sanctioned oppression of the 60s is the prevailing surveillance state we experience in today’s enemy-deficient world, where Terrorism has replaced Communism as justification for the recision of Constitutionally guaranteed civil rights.
One can hope that if documentation of government complicity in the 60s assassinations were to be globally distributed, say, by a WikiLeaks type action, such widespread opening of the collective eye would indeed destroy the legitimacy of the United States government sufficiently to cause its downfall and replacement by a democratic parliamentary form of government. This would, unfortunately, require a degree of public participation in the process of government now sadly lacking. But let us not discount the ability of the American people to rise to an occasion when sufficiently motivated. We are long past due our responsibility to “water the tree of Liberty with the blood of tyrants.”
Unless and until the documented truth is revealed, there is nothing the government need do, and nothing the awake and aware public can do about our ineluctably corrupt government. The corporate oligarchy controls access to information, inescapably surveils the public for signs of unrest and incipient rebellion, creates and maintains an atmosphere of fear of fictive external enemies, and maintains a monopoly of force against any potential or actual uprising.
In Oliver Stone’s words, as Jim Garrison in his 1991 film, JFK
 It may become a generational
affair, with questions passed down from
father to son, mother to daughter, in the
manner of the ancient runic bards. Someday
somewhere, someone might find out the
damned Truth. Or we might just build
ourselves a new Government like the
Declaration of Independence says we should
do when the old one ain't working.

An American naturalist wrote, "a patriot
must always be ready to defend his
country against its government."

That “American naturalist” was Edward Paul Abbey, author of Desert Solitaire, Fire on the Mountain, and The Monkey Wrench Gang, anarchist, gadlfy, curmudgeon, and inspiration to a generation of patriots who continue to defend this country, and its natural habitats and species, from an overweening government.

There’s plenty of work to do and time is on our side.

Lies and Disinformation in Old al-Sham

From this article:
Syria “Wag the Dog”. Towards a Major Mideast War? | Global Research
we learn:

1) According to Israeli on-line intel news Debkafile, several days before the chemical attack in Damascus hundreds of armed rebels crossed over into Syria from a newly established CIA base in Jordan. The rebels were led by US commanders.” They were trained and armed by the US CIA

2) Centcom, the US military command for the Middle East, has established a new underground war room near Amman, Jordan, for the purpose of commanding Syrian operations. Recently, General Martin Dempsey, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs, visited Amman to inaugurate the new forward command center.”

This is the second step in the decades-old Neocon plan for a ring of “regime-changed” countries around Israel, protecting the US Empire’s forward bastion in the Middle East and monopolizing access to Mideast oil.

Don’t be fooled by the Oval One II, any “limited” attack on Syria will be only the first step in a protracted imperialist war by the United States in the Middle east. The plan is to sear Syria seriously, kick Assad aside, erase Iran and consolidate Middle East oil resources for the United States and its favored minion states.

This could well represent the beginning of the ultimate end of the US Empire, as the US government overextends its military in the Middle east quagmire. “Shock and Awe” only works once, if it works at all. Ultimately the US government must commit money, men and materiel to subdue and maintain its imperium. Meanwhile, economic and social conditions will continue to deteriorate at home, requiring ever more surveillance,  oppression, restrictions on civil rights, ignoring and shredding the Constitution of the Unted States of America, if there is anything left after the Patriot Act.

Oligarchs and tyrants have never been much on history. While history doesn’t repeat itself, it often rhymes. The Arabic name for the area now occupied by Syria is “al-Sham.”  One may as well call it “Roobi-kahn.”

Syrian rebels armed and trained by CIA ‘on way to battlefield’

First Syria rebels armed and trained by CIA ‘on way to battlefield’ – Telegraph

Wait a minute! Since when did we start training and arming one side in a civil war in a sovereign nation, and send them into battle from another country?

Oh wait. Contras, Nicaragua, Ronald Reagan. Iran/Contra.

Oh yeah, I forgot.

Ronald Reagan got into trouble while he slept through the Iran/Contra affair, supplying arms and training to the Contras.

So this is all right now? This is official United States government policy?

I wondered what all that shredded parchment was on the Oval Office floor.

Another brick in the imperialist pathway

Anglo-American Ambitions behind the Assassination of Benazir Bhutto and the Destabilization of Pakistan

“Musharraf benefits from the removal of a bitter rival, but now must find a way to re-establish order. Musharraf now has an ideal justification to crack down on “terrorists” and impose full martial law, with Bush-Cheney working from the shadows behind Musharraf—and continuing to manipulate or remove his apparatus, if Musharraf proves too unreliable or broken to suit Anglo-American plans.” Larry Chin, Global Research, December 29, 2007

As usual the uS press and their gB cohorts withhold the most important parts of the story. We get the dots without the patterns, let alone the connections.

As Chin points out in this article, these dramatic events are steps in a carefully planned pathway to global uS Empire. The “War on Terror” is a transparent excuse to deploy uS troops to every country containing natural resources or strategically placed to access natural resources. Pakistan and Afghanistan control access to Caspian Sea oil and gas, as well as the growing domination of Middle East oil.

The CIA, the strongarm thugs of the uS government, via its manufactured Al Qaeda (not the original Al Qa’ida, which was a traditional economic network) seeks, as always, to destabilize governments in this volatile region. Most of the time they work in the background, with occasional flashes of violence betraying their presence. As with their current Vice Terrorist, Dick Cheney, they seek to leave no footprints in their bloody wake.

This is what the united States has become: the inheritor of British colonialism writ large and ugly. Capitalizing on terrorism, global warming and peak oil, that is, just about everything, the uS corporate oligarchy (aka fascist government) seeks to consolidate power throughout the world, such that its corporate sponsors continue to make obscene profits, and the beneficiaries of power and influence remain in power as long as possible.

This is the face of the central state for the foreseeable future, and that face doesn’t get any prettier as it gets older. As the state clamps down on the people, the people will resist. The state has all the guns, and “non-lethal” weapons, and the willingness to use them against the people. Social and political mechanisms are in place in the united States to repress, “with a firm and manly hand,” any movement by the people to regain control of the government.

It doesn’t look good for freedom and liberty today, and the future of democracy.

US government opposes democracy

James Petras: CIA Destabilization Memo Surfaces on Venezuela

This article reveals the continuing saga of United States government opposition to democratic governments in countries that contain natural resource desired by US corporations. From the earliest banana republics, the United States government has interfered in the internal affairs of sovereign nations, using the CIA to “destabilize” and boldly overthrow legitimate democratic governments and replace them with less democratic, even dictatorial governments that were more easily influenced to support US business.

As always, it is the people who suffer, the very people that US pretends to uphold, the very self-determination that is inscribed as a basic tenet of this country.

The lies and hypocrisy continue, to be replaced by escalating levels of violence until overt invasion is the only option left. Look for increasingly desperate attempts to “destabilize” the Chavez and Morales governments for daring to defy the posturing bully to the north. Some excuse will be found to send American troops to South America, undoubtedly under the umbrella of “terrorism.”

How can I sit here, knowing this is going on every day, in the country that I call home? How long before I say “STOP!” And how do I stop it?
